OpenWrt for SPI

This post was finally edited by reukiodo at 2023-8-21 16:07

For a long time, the OPi Zero series have come with an SPI that is too small (2MB) to run OpenWrt directly from them.

Now that the R1, R1+, Zero3, and others have a 16MB SPI, any plans to create (and provide flashing instructions for) an OpenWrt build that fits on SPI so no uSD card is needed? Ideally the boot process would still allow booting from uSD first, then fall back to SPI OpenWrt if the uSD is unbootable.

I found someone had attempted this with some success https://github.com/melsem/openwrt-19.07.7-spi for the R1 and even the Zero (after 16MB SPI upgrade). This is using an older OpenWrt and has limitations on then booting from uSD card when desired.

Also now even more desirable with the Zero 2W as it is extremely pocketable.

https://forum.openwrt.org/t/xunlong-orange-pi-r1-boot-from-flash/57700/17 has a lot more details on the flashing from scratch, as well as re-compiling newer versions for support.
