They are dirt cheap already... just check comparable boards on the market.

Might be dirt cheap for you, but in EU if you include customs, tax and other fees the board comes at around 50€, not 29$.
A no frills option without eMMC, IR, pcie, wlan and less usbs (since these run off usb hub) could easily make for a ~20$ board (no customs or anything for eu folks) and would perform exactly the same for a NAS use case. Think Orange PI PC2 but H5 replaced with H6. Enter Orange PI PC3

Allwinner H6 has a quirky PCIe controller that doesn't map the PCIe address space properly to CPU, and accessing the PCIe config space, IO space or memory space will need to be wrapped. As Linux doesn't wrap PCIe memory space access, it's not possible to do a proper PCIe controller driver for H6. The BSP kernel modifies the driver to wrap the access, so it's also not generic, and only devices with modified driver will work.
