Recently I received some Orange Pi Zero machines (512 MB version), and I start working them as I/O front ends for WD Node Zero assemblies.

However, the WIFI behavior it is weird with a several mac retries according with wavemon.  In fact this software reports very low signal level for the device.

As a test I desconfigured the wlan0 and added a Canakit (ralink chipset) WIFI dongle and ... what a surprise ... it made MORE mac losts although having much more signal level available.

Also, I had an Orange Pi + 2E and it is a delightful WIFI powerhorse.  Both (Zero and 2E) are running on ARMBIAN.

You can notice the link quality difference.  In the case of the +2E it is far, but it an SSH connection feels smooth when compared with the other two on the Zero.

Do somebody knows something about this?  It seems it is not directly related with the WIFI circuitry but with the machine itself or the way the operating system enable the WIFI capacity.
