I don't know. I never tried to make Kodi work on anything except OpenELEC. Try with Armbian (legacy), it offers both, Debian and Ubuntu images, with most issues fixed.

The .asoundrc file is stored in your Home Directory. Now it is possible to choose sndhdmi as Audio out in Kodi.

starting from jernej work on openelec 7 and thc013 libreelec 7 github https://github.com/Shaggy013/LibreELEC_OPI/tree/Opi_HW_7,
I built the librelelec 8 image for orange pi pc and the other allwinner H3 boards.
I own only the Orange PI PC, so I tested this board only. It seems to work to me, but I didn't test all and many bugs could be in this image.
I'll publish the instructions and  the patch to apply on the libreelec 8 github code to build the image in the next days on my blog, http://www.microdev.it,; I think to publish the images I built too.
Other people could use this first test to improve the images.

@thc013 LibreELEC 7 has HW acceleration.
Does your fork also support HW acceleration ?
Maybe, also you will try merge @jernej OpenELEC 7.0 with new yesterday relesed OpenELEC 8.0 ?

I used the same kernel and video drivers used in libreelec 7 and jernej openelec implementation.
I added some modifications to the drivers, Libreelec and H3 project to build it successfully.
The videos from youtube and other Kodi video program worked, as I experienced, as in openelec 7.
