First goal is to actually have mainline HDMI driver, but yes, having better support for all function ...

I'm sorry, I do not remember, but does the legacy HDMI driver support a maximum of 1920x1080@60 output? No 4K?  And about Android build, does it support 4K@30?
Thanks in advance

Legacy HDMI driver supports 4K resolution, but that is not really the problem. Kodi uses GPU for rendering user interface and SW decoded video. Issue here is that GPU doesn't support 4K resolution. This means that 4K resolution is not supported by OpenELEC at this point. I don't know/care about Android.

Situation is actually solvable by rendering user interface in smaller resolution and scale it by HW, but there is a lot of reasons why I didn't try to do that. Most important is that I don't have 4K monitor for testing, secondly, Kodi is doesn't have such functionality implemented yet and thirdly, I don't want to work with legacy kernel anymore.

I remember i tried Android Kodi and some of 4k videos worked, but they were not smooth and not h/w accelerated. CPU usage was 100% at all cores.
I was able to play h/w accelerated 4k videos in Linux (Armbian Legacy Desktop), with compilled ffmpeg and mpv player for vdpau and x264/x265 support. For some reason it was not possible with mplayer. I don't have 4k monitor, but my 1080p screen displayer 1/4 of video in windowed mode.

H3 supports only H265 (HEVC) 4K videos, everything else must be SW decoded.

And yes, on 1080p even H265 4K videos work flawlessly in Kodi, because they are downscaled by HW.

Are you sure? I have some h264 4k videos (downloaded from Yotube) and they work fine, hw decoded. So I'm pretty sure 4k h264 can be hw decoded on H3

P.S.
Can anybody describe what are the differences between LibreELEC builds from this thread and olde Jernej's Openelec builds? Which kernel is included in LibreElec images? BSP, old 3.4 or new 4.10?

The differences were answered few messages before .

Same Kernel as OpenELEC builds, Legacy 3.4.

I have 4k h264 video which has issues at playback. It may be software bug, but official docs said that H265 is the only with 4K support, so there might be some HW issue as well.

BTW, if Kodi 17 is used, then it doesn't have HW accelerated decoding.
