Thank you very much. This confirms that this is a bug by design or firmware and not one in my particular board.

You're welcome. I'd like to find a newer version of the kernel to solve this (and lots of other issues to) issue.

Does not exist and will not for some time, but you can get it sooner by helping those projects:

I'd love to, but I don't know where to start.

Both projects need not just hardcore kernel hackers. If you are good at bash, a lot of scripting needs to be revisited https://github.com/armbian/config/tree/development This script also need an updated manual https://github.com/armbian/docum ... e_Armbian-Config.md ... an entire section of manuals needs constant updating: https://github.com/armbian/documentation/tree/master/docs Then there are forum moderators duties, testing https://forum.armbian.com/topic/ ... li-xu4-next-upgrade ... and nevertheless if you don't have time, you can help fund the project https://www.armbian.com/donate
Out of all this, you have to do what you know best and like to. Things where you want to improve your skills or just have fun.

Not all applications/processes are multi threaded. If a background task is running, and that is probably all of the few services that are on the Beta Ubuntu images provided by Sunxi it is likely only using one core at any given time and cpu0 (first core) is first in line to execute the thread. I use crypto hashing programs and they assign work threads evenly along all cores and I am not seeing a bottleneck like you describe in my scenario at least. Still we are using old kernel 3.10.65 but I am happy with it for the time being. Satisfactory mainline kernel support might be available by the end of the year along with stable Armbian images which currently the WIP images underclock the cpu to half of the 1.8ghz possible so are useless.
