they are usually smaller file size than armbians

They are certainly not smaller. Latest Armbian server image download size is around 200Mb (180-250, depends on the userspace). But the size should not be a deciding factor, even more, is actually better for SD card health. Stock images, which you recommend as an alternative are a security and stability hazard. Not to mention that there are no fixes or utilities in the userspace. They were made from a very old kernel which never received an update. We also still have this 3.4.y kernel, but it contains many fixes. It's also possible to use it - you can download our historic images from archives.

A quick check between real Vanilla images (unchanged upstream kernel sources and plain Debian) and Armbian ... which on top of this provides end user support.

on your more expensive 4gb sd

If you want to run an operating system on a 1GB SD card from the (pre?)previous century you need to understand that problem is not about size, but speed and reliability - how fast it will die. 1-4Gb SD card can be up to 100x slower on relevant speed factor than this http://amzn.to/2fDJVlw standard choice. This is even much better: https://amzn.to/2wlos4X

OrangePI_Jessie_Xfce = 1.4gb

Link, please. I hope you unpack them?

430Mb compressed -> 1.8G uncompressed, 20% reserve, SWAP included. XFCE + Chromium. It's hard to go lower than this. If you don't need Chromium, you start with CLI image and install plain minimal XFCE desktop from armbian-config. Without a browser or anything.
