1. All avaliable images for Orange Pi are using more or less the same kernel, so you can't expect any difference. Lately, Armbian and Openelec are going forward with development, so wo do progress but we can't fix (all) shitty wireless drivers. It's way too much work for a small group. We will try to fix a driver for onboard wireless chip, that's planned, the rest is up to community. If someone will fix drivers and prepare for merge, they will become a part of a kernel, otherwise you are on your own. You stil can compile drivers, without recompiling a kernel, ... but I don't know which sources are good.
2. This is Linux and drivers for some low cost wifi adaptors are simply crap. Vendors doesn't care.
