I had the problem with libssh to.
I trought changing like you, but didn't run.
Now the problem is the domain  https://red.libssh.org/ is not online.
I resolved changing the file /OpenELEC-OPi2/packages/network/libssh/package.mk:
I commented the original link and i put a new link:
....
PKG_NAME="libssh"
PKG_VERSION="0.7.3"
PKG_REV="1"
PKG_ARCH="any"
PKG_LICENSE="OpenSource"
PKG_SITE="http://www.libssh.org/"
#PKG_URL="https://red.libssh.org/attachments/download/195/$PKG_NAME-$PKG_VERSION.tar.xz"
PKG_URL="https://git.libssh.org/projects/libssh.git/snapshot/$PKG_NAME-$PKG_VERSION.tar.bz2"
....

I have a feeling we might be compatible as 64bit is backwards compatible with 32bits as well with maybe minor mods in driver source(included)

No, because it is at most backward compatible, not forward. I checked everything inside that tarball before and I didn't find anything that it would be useful.
