I noticed that, at least when using Armbian, the blinking green light has a rythm that looks like a heartbeat.  When the system gets hotter it "beats" faster.  Or, maybe it's when the system gets busier it "beats" faster.

Is this a function of the board's heat sensors, or is this the operating system that's blinking it?  When I shut down and restart a system that feels hot to the touch, the "beats" still continue to blink more quickly which seems to indicate that it's a function of how hot the board and/or CPU are.

Thanks in advance for any ideas and information.

The heartbeat cadence is due to a LED trigger called 'heartbeat'.  I don't think it really means anything and I don't think the frequency is related to system load or temperature.

But I could be wrong.  Perhaps someone will chip in with more details.

Cheers,
Steven

When I put my Orange Pi One and Orange Pi PC under heavy load the LED does pulse more quickly.  It seems to be heat-related since the fast LED doesn't stop after I halt the load test.

Is it a kernel function?  I don't see any processes in userspace that seem to be monitoring load.

It's kernel controlled, I think the pulse speed depends on the actual cpu frequency, so higher load = higher freq = faster blink.

I think so as well. It may blink every 5M processor instructions, and depending on the CPU frequency, which is based on the CPU load, those instructions may go faster or slower to be executed.

When I turn off the Orange Pi and restart it with zero load it still beats at the very fast rate.  I think it's heat.
