I’m trying to figure out what to do with our small “media zoo”: a couple of content sites, one Android app and a tiny CTV channel we launched as an experiment. Right now everything runs on a basic ad network setup with almost no proper analytics, so revenue jumps up and down and it’s hard to plan anything. I feel like we do have some inventory, but I’m not sure whether it’s worth building our own monetization stack or just staying on off-the-shelf platforms. How do you handle this in your projects?

We went through a very similar phase last year with a bunch of niche websites and one streaming app. CPMs were sliding and we were way too dependent on a single partner. At some point we started looking at supply-side platform companies to get more control over demand sources and pricing. That’s when we came across https://geomotiv.com/industries/adtech/ssp/ — they focus more on building custom SSP-style solutions around a specific business model rather than selling a generic plug-and-play tool. It still requires work on your side, but having your own logic for auctions, reporting, and integrations turned out to be much more flexible than sticking to one canned platform.

Funny thing is, reading threads like this always reminds me how differently people treat their digital side projects. Some folks love to over-engineer everything from day one, others stick to the simplest possible setup for years and somehow it’s totally fine. In the end it usually comes down to how much time and energy you actually want to invest in polishing the tech, versus just keeping things running well enough while you focus on content, marketing, or something completely outside of the technical stack.
