I created a simple method to boot most ARM64 distro directly from NVMe on the Orange Pi 5 Pro, using a universal bootloader on the eMMC.
No need to recompile anything, no SPI Flash, no SD card after setup.
Tested with: Debian, Armbian, Ubuntu, Arch.
